Knowing is half the battle

I was not planning on giving some big announcment or anything, I feel like since this blog
is mainly a family journal, I could type my feelings here without telling the whole world.

Last week Griffin was offically diagnosed with ADHD.  He's met with a Child Psychologist
a few times, he was given lots of different kinds of tests.  Going over the results I felt like
it all 'clicked'.  Now I understand why he is the way that he is.  Not that he's bad or anything,
he's just a little different than your average kid.  Since he spent so much time with Griffin and
did so many different tests, we are confident that the Psychologist  results are correct.

How do we feel?  Well, I'll speak for myself (mom)  I'm a little sad, overwhelmed, but happy to
know, and knowing is half the battle !

I quickly started doing some research to find out as much information as I could.  I talked to my
oldest brother who also has ADHD.  He was able to share his wealth of Knowledge with me.

Here is some intresting information that I came accross, it helps describes what both
ADD & ADHD are, I've found the information very valuable.

Myths about Attention Deficit Disorder

Myth #1: All kids with ADD/ADHD are hyperactive.

Some children with ADD/ADHD are hyperactive, but many others with attention problems are not. Children with ADD/ADHD who are inattentive, but not overly active, may appear to be spacey and unmotivated.

Myth #2: Kids with ADD/ADHD can never pay attention.

Children with ADD/ADHD are often able to concentrate on activities they enjoy. But no matter how hard they try, they have trouble maintaining focus when the task at hand is boring or repetitive.

Myth #3: Kids with ADD/ADHD choose to be difficult and could behave better if they wanted to.

Children with ADD/ADHD may do their best to be good, but still be unable to sit still, stay quiet, or pay attention. They may appear disobedient, but that doesn’t mean they’re acting out on purpose.

Myth #4: Kids will eventually grow out of ADD/ADHD.

ADD/ADHD often continues into adulthood, so don’t wait for your child to outgrow the problem. Treatment can help your child learn to manage and minimize the symptoms.

Myth #5: Medication is the best treatment option for ADD/ADHD.

Medication is often prescribed for Attention Deficit Disorder, but it might not be the best option for your child. Effective treatment for ADD/ADHD also includes education, behavior therapy, support at home and school, exercise, and proper nutrition.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The three primary characteristics of ADD/ADHD are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The signs and symptoms a child with attention deficit disorder has depends on which characteristics predominate. Children with ADD/ADHD may be:
Which one of these children may have ADD/ADHD?
The hyperactive boy who talks nonstop and can’t sit still.
The quiet dreamer who sits at her desk and stares off into space.
Both A and B
The correct answer is “C.”
Inattentive, but not hyperactive or impulsive.
Hyperactive and impulsive, but able to pay attention.
Inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive (the most common form of ADHD).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Symptoms of inattention in children:

Doesn’t pay attention to details or makes careless mistakes

Has trouble staying focused; is easily distracted

Appears not to listen when spoken to

Has difficulty remembering things and following instructions

Has trouble staying organized, planning ahead, and finishing projects

Frequently loses or misplaces homework, books, toys, or other items
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Symptoms of hyperactivity in children:
Constantly fidgets and squirms
Often leaves his or her seat in situations where sitting quietly is expected
Moves around constantly, often running or climbing inappropriately
Talks excessively, has difficulty playing quietly
Is always “on the go,” as if driven by a motor
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Symptoms of impulsivity in children:

Blurts out answers without waiting to be called on hear the whole question

Has difficulty waiting for his or her turn

Often interrupts others

Intrudes on other people’s conversations or games

Inability to keep powerful emotions in check, resulting in angry outbursts or temper tantrums
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Positive effects of ADD & ADHD in children
In addition to the challenges, there are also positive traits associated with people who have attention deficit disorder:
Creativity – Children who have ADD/ADHD can be marvelously creative and imaginative. The child who daydreams and has ten different thoughts at once can become a master problem-solver, a fountain of ideas, or an inventive artist. Children with ADD may be easily distracted, but sometimes they notice what others don’t see.
Flexibility – Because children with ADD/ADHD consider a lot of options at once, they don’t become set on one alternative early on and are more open to different ideas.
Enthusiasm and spontaneity – Children with ADD/ADHD are rarely boring! They’re interested in a lot of different things and have lively personalities. In short, if they’re not exasperating you (and sometimes even when they are), they’re a lot of fun to be with.
Energy and drive – When kids with ADD/ADHD are motivated, they work or play hard and strive to succeed. It actually may be difficult to distract them from a task that interests them, especially if the activity is interactive or hands-on.
Keep in mind, too, that ADD/ADHD has nothing to do with intelligence or talent. Many children with ADD/ADHD are intellectually or artistically gifted.
For now we are not going to medicate him.  In talking with people & doing research
we feel like there are other things we can try & do to help him first.
1. We are starting a behavior modification program ( the Psychologist is helping set this up next week)
2. We've signed him up for karate ( to help with his focus & respect)
3. We are trying some all natural chewables (that all suppose to help with attention)
4.  We are going to be working with him 100% making sure we give him one task at a time
to work on, then moving on to the next task.
As my brother said "it will be an uphill battle."  We ADORE this little boy, so no matter how hard
it is we are going to do everything we can so that he can be successful in life!
*Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
Knowing really is half the battle, we can now understand him a lot better!
She's confident, I'll give her that!
So, Savannah just finished her project for the 100th day of school.  You use 100 item to make
something.  She knew exactly what she wanted to make. To be honest her vision was cute, but boring.
Since I'm super busy latley, I decided to just let her do exactly what she wanted with no input from me.
Woking hard, dirty face and all.
Almost done ..... wait for it........
Amazing Right?
When she was done she said "I'm so impressed with my talent, when Dad sees
it he's gonna freak out!"  See, I told you she was confident.
She said her friends will say AHHHH
So, just now as she saw this she said "Mom, what if that's on your blog & people
see it?"  I say that would be great right?  She says "NO, they'll see it & copy it!"
CONFIDENCE DO YOU HAVE IT?
Derby day
Today was the pinewood derby.  Trevor made a green car he called the Viper.
Checking in & getting his drivers liscense, he was #1
These were cool!
Most of the cars ready for the races.  They are all upside down.
I was the score keeper. I was the one in charge of writting the scores down (tons of pressure)
I am shocked every year at how competitive all the Dads are.  It's crazy!  Out of 22 boys
Trevor did not place in the top 3, that's ok, he still had fun!
Game time
We bought the Disney version of Monopoly the other day.
Last night we played it as a family.  It was a huge hit!
Everyone really enjoyed it.  It will probably be a favorite
on game night from now on.
Finally finished
We finally went and bought drawer pulls for the dresser & nightstand that I re-finished
for Savannah.  They look so pretty!  She loves them, and so do we.  I have a few more
small projects for her room that I'll be doing soon.  I'm glad this project is finally done.
She's a natural
Patrick taped the letter of each key onto our paino, then printed out some songs
using letters instead of notes.  Savannah is loving it.  So far she doing Mary had a
little Lamb, and Twinkle, twinkle.  The boys have been playing too.  It's so nice
to hear music in our home.
We'll be getting the finish re-done soon, then have it tuned.
In the fall we want the kids to start paino lessons.
Harry Potter in Legos
Trevor & Griffin got several Harry Potter Lego sets for Christmas.  Today when Griffin was
feeling up to it, he and I worked on the last set, the Hogwarts Castle.  We finally finished it
tonight.  It turned out great!  I think this set is great, lots of great detail.  Griffin & I just moved
all of the pieces over to the display shelf Pat built last week.  I can actually say I have started
to find Legos fun & relaxing.  Trevor was not as 'into' this set for some reason.  He helped,
just not very much.  Too busy reading a bunch of Harry Potter books he got for Christmas.
Proudly showing off his hard work
Griffin's turn
He was bundled up in a sweatshirt & two jackets
because he was so cold!
Now Griffin's got a fever & feels sick!
Saturday
Savannah woke up at like 4:00 in the morning with an earache.  I gave her some Advil, and
she went back to sleep.  When she woke up she seemed better, but would tell me her ear hurt
every once in awhile.
We went grocery shopping.... that was NO FUN with all 3 kiddos.  The boys are wild in stores.
I cleaned downstairs, made it look wondeful then messed it up again in no time   :)
I made some tasty dishes for Patrick to take to a get together he was going to tonight.
The kids played Archaeologist in the front & backyard, they used scooters for transportation.
By the time 7:15pm rolled around Savannah was feeling yucky again.  I felt bad for her.
I gave her a good dose of Advil and put ear drops in her ear.  I let her sleep in her sleeping
bag in my bedroom tonight.  Looks like we need to go to the Doctor.  Actually we all are
a little sick with cold type symptoms.  A day in the life of us.
Fun Sautrday!
A recipe & quick story
Overheard Griffin asking Patrick - Dad, do you have to go to regular college?
You know there is hair syle college & cooking college. I'm going to baking
college instead of regular college.
I could totally see that career choice for Griffin, he loves to help in the kitchen!
Doing what he does best (eating & reading)
 Our family has a few favorite recipes that we love.  I've  been meaning to
post them, but never get around to it.  Tonight I made a family favorite and
I'm finally going to post the recipe.  When Griffin saw what what we were
having he said " I know what that is, AWESOME!"  We gobble this right up
every single time.
Grilled Chicken and Sesame Noodles
Chicken Marinade:
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 teriyaki sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. ginger
2-3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
sesame oil
Mix marinade ingredients and toss with chicken.  Cover and refrigerate
for a couple of hours or overnight (I put it all in gallon ziploc)
Remove chicken from marinade, discard marinade.  Heat sesame oil
in large skillet over medium heat and add chicken cook 10 minutes
or so until done, adding more oil if needed.  Remove from pan
and cool slightly.  Slice into thin strips.  Keep warm.
Noodles:
1 lb. spagetti noodles
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup   sesame oil
1/3 cup sugar
4 scallions, thinly sliced
1/2 cup sesame seeds.
Prepare pasta according to package. Drain.  In a jar add
A New Year's Message
Happy 2011
I always find the idea of a new year fun.  It's nice to have a fresh start.  Hopefully this year
will be a great one.  The kids and I (Pat worked) stayed up till 10:00pm so we could watch
the ball drop in NYC.  We had a yummy dessert, party hats, horns and cider!
I made Molten Lava cakes, they were yummy!
Let's toast to a New Year!
They loved thier little party.
We hope you have a great year!
